The Sprout and the Bean

Not always sure whether or not I like Joanna Newsom, but I do like this:

and this, for that matter:

Reminds me a bit of ISB, especially the Dolly Collins arrangements on The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter.

What I like about her is that she seems to want to make it hard to like her -that voice! Which accentuates the moment of surrender when you do finally ‘like’ her. This is good.

It’s a fine balance, isn’t it? Slightly reminiscent of the way Licorice McKechnie sang on the early ISB stuff, with a bit of Melanie Safka and Bjork thrown in. It has charm, in a way that makes me feel slightly uncomfortable – probably faux jail-bait innocence. Very nice, but I don’t think I’d want a lot of it…

Somehow managed to copy-paste the same tune in twice. The second one’s meant to be something different. Will fix.

    “faux jail-bait innocence?” seriously? really?
